Neil Maya Quartet - 1959

"Neil Maya once again turns his impeccable talent to reinterpreting the music of 1959"
Ian Roberts Teignmouth Jazz Nov 2018

1959 is often considered an extremely influential year in the development of modern jazz with a number of new sub genres within jazz coming to the fore in this year. 1959 spawned some of jazz’s finest albums of all times including of course Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue and Dave Brubeck’s Time Out.

Neil Maya Quartet - 1959

1959

The concept of creating a performance focusing on the music of this seminal year has been developing for Neil over the last couple of years.

This is due in part due to his interest in the music of Dave Brubeck due to the band’s very successful Brubeck Project. Neil also has come to realise he has a real affinity with the ‘50s approach to jazz of which 1959 seems, to Neil, to reach a high point. With Gav Martin on piano, Kev Sanders Bass and Preston Prince Drums.

Songs of Love & Death

Be the first to hear them live

"Songs of Love & Death' is a new collaborative album (to be released as an album in November 2021) by Reg Meuross and Harbottle & Jonas.

Reg Meuross has thirteen solo albums to his name, and songs such as ‘England Green & England Grey’ and ‘And Jesus Wept’ have entered the modern folk canon, but, until now, he has never delved into the traditional songs that have so influenced his writing.

He has chosen 10 traditional songs and recorded them with Harbottle & Jonas. Matching Reg’s talent for conveying the true meaning behind a song in his delivery, with David and Freya’s exceptional arrangement and accompaniment skills, Songs of Love & Death tackles some of the most enduring songs from the English tradition.

Harbottle & Jonas, husband and wife duo David and Freya, are “one of the finest folk duos in the country” according to Folking.com, and have made an impressive mark on the UK’s folk and roots scene in a short period of time.

‘I would stake money on a bright future for Harbottle & Jonas’ – Folkwords

These two teachers turned road-hardened folk troubadours have plenty of tales to tell, old and new, and the stories between the songs are as entertaining as the music itself so you are likely to find a smile on your face (even when the content of the song turns macabre). Well-researched and crafted, their repertoire covers a range of social, political and historical issues. They also sing about family, the Devil, Malcolm and Grimsby.
