Hello. I am Shiok, and welcome to my kitchen.
I grew up in Singapore, shuttling between lanes of open air markets and hawker centres, feasting on foods of different cultures. There were great memories of sitting on little stools beside a charming Chinese old lady, so skilled in preparing traditional wanton noodles; and standing beside a dessert stall, waiting for my chendol made by a cheerful Malay hawker. This is my country – Singapore – where local street fare is a delicious melting pot of diverse cuisines.
During 1800s when British ruled, Singapore flourished and attracted many migrants from countries around. It is reflected in my own family – my father came from Indonesia and my mother from China. Both are good cooks, and I remember being an amazing little helper in the kitchen! There was where I learnt about basic ingredients in different ethnic foods.
A few years ago, with my Malaysian husband and three children, we moved to England. Because we missed the food back home terribly and were unable to find authentic Singaporean and Malaysian foods, I started making them myself. My passion about food do not stop at just eating them. I love to cook, and most importantly, I love to feed! All of these got me to start Shiok’s Kitchen. Using the finest ingredients and no MSG, I will share with you the fabulous and exotic cuisines we have in our beautiful island. Come and join me in this sumptuous journey!
